Brief History
The Grand Theatre is the third oldest working theatre in the whole of the UK and has seen a vast amount of change since it first opened its doors in 1782. Simply known as the “Theatre” it played host to a number of great actors and actresses including Sarah Siddons.
Disaster struck in 1908 when a fire, which is believed to have started in the cottages used to accommodate the actors. The whole side of the theatre was gutted by the fire and it was forced to close.
By 1920 the theatre was back up and running with regular performances from the Lancaster Footlights, they brought the theatre in 1950 in order to save it from demolition.
The theatre today sees a number of famous acts gracing its stage as well as those past actors which haunt the building.
There have been a number of sightings both on and backstage of the theatre, the most famous being Sarah Siddons who has been seen on a number of occasions both on the stage and on the balcony.
Young children have been seen running around in the top bar, Staff often report children’s handprints on the bar mirror when the theatre is first opened up.
Walking around the theatre you almost feel at peace being there but it all changes backstage. People often experience feeling like they are being watched and that they shouldn’t be there, it’s believed that a male actor who held “secrets” doesn’t like people in that area and wants you out of his room.
